Here are some interesting facts about Maldon…
- Byrhtnoth, Ealdorman of Essex, is an honorary member of the Horizone team. Unfortunately he died during the 991 Battle of Maldon fought on Northey Island. Plucky Byrhtnoth and an army of local Saxons were attempting to repel a Viking raiding party. He is now immortalised in statue form at the end of Promenade Park
- More of Maldon’s grisly history… The Maldon Grain Riots took place in March 1629. A group of 100-140 rioters led by “Captain” Ann Carter, the wife of a butcher, boarded a Flemish grain ship and removed grain by filling their caps and gowns. Poor Anne was subsequently executed after being deemed to be a threat to social order
- Maldon was the location of the first Tesco store to be designated as a “supermarket” in the country, established in 1958
- Maldon’s name comes from mǣl meaning ‘monument or cross’ and dūn meaning ‘hill’, so translates as ‘monument hill’
- The town’s All Saints’ Church is unique in England in having a triangular tower
- During World War II, Maldon featured in Operation Sealion, Nazi Germany’s invasion plan for Britain. The plan called for the Germans to advance to a line between Maldon and the River Severn after they had landed in the southern coast of England
- Edward Bright (1721–1750) was the “fat man of Maldon”, a grocer who, at 47.5 stone (302 kg) was reputed to be the fattest man in England. His chair resides in Maldon’s Moot Hall
- Maldon is the hometown of two Marvel Comics superheroes: Brian Braddock, the original Captain Britain, and his twin sister Betsy Braddock
- Maldon is also the hometown of Sam Ryder (born in 1989) who represented Britain in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest coming second with 466 points
